CGS Songkran 2025

On April 9, 2025, staff members from the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) at Walailak University (WU) participated in the university-wide “Walailak Songkran” event, held at the Architecture and Design Practice Building. This festive gathering aimed to celebrate the Thai New Year while preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Thailand.

The event began with a traditional Buddhist ceremony, where participants made merit and offered alms to monks. Following the spiritual activities, members of the College joined in the heartfelt “Rod Nam Dam Hua” ritual—an age-old Thai tradition of pouring water over the hands of respected elders as a gesture of gratitude and to seek blessings. This ritual included elders from local communities surrounding the university, fostering a spirit of unity and respect across generations.

In addition to participating in the ceremonies, the CGS hosted a booth featuring a special health-focused treat: a blended seven-legume drink. The refreshing beverage was made from chickpeas, mung beans, black beans, red beans, soybeans, white beans, and Job’s tears. Visitors enjoyed free servings of this nutritious drink, which emphasized both health awareness and traditional Thai ingredients.

Songkran, also known as the Thai New Year, is celebrated annually in April and is deeply rooted in Thai culture. It marks a time of renewal, respect for elders, and joyful gatherings with family and community. The festival’s origins are closely tied to ancient Brahmin and Buddhist customs, making it one of the most cherished holidays in Thailand.

The CGS is proud to have taken part in this meaningful event and remains committed to honoring Thai heritage while fostering a vibrant and respectful university community.

Happy Songkran! May this New Year bring happiness, good health, and prosperity to all.
